See how a heat pump works
The Hayward HeatPro takes the heat from the surrounding air and uses it to heat the water in your pool. During heat pump operation, liquid freon from inside the unit is pumped through the system (A) and is turned into a heated gas. This happens when heat is taken from the surrounding air (B) as it is drawn through the evaporator by the fan. The compressor (C) receives this warmer gas and compresses it to a higher pressure, resulting in the freon reaching even higher temperatures. As the unit sends the heated gas through the heat exchanger, the gas gives up its heat to the surrounding water (D). The freon is then reverted to its liquid state which completes the cycle (A). (F) The water, which is being forced through the heat exchanger (D) by your pool pump, is heated by three to five degrees as it passes through the heat exchanger. The water, now warmer, then flows back into your pool (G).

Although Pool Heat Pumps offer up to 80% savings in fuel costs and are generally much more reliable and safer than gas pool heaters, chemical and galvanic corrosion can TOTALLY RUIN swimming pool heat pumps!
The chemicals in pool water, including chlorine, bromine and muriatic acid, can be extremely corrosive, especially when pools are shocked and very high levels of chlorine exist or if the owner lets the pool chemistry get out of balance or if chlorine tablets are put in the skimmer. Most pool heaters use copper or cupronickel heat exchangers, both of which will rapidly corrode in this water.

In the case of heat pumps, if a water heat exchanger gets a hole in it (usually due to corrosion) and pool water enters the sealed refrigeration system, the entire heat pump is ruined!! Even if the heat pump is not running, once a leak has allowed all of the freon to bleed out, the pool pump will produce enough pressure to force water into the heat exchanger and eventually into the compressor. Once water enters the compressor, its internal parts will begin to corrode since they are made of carbon steel. In addition, the copper tubing in the evaporator will also begin to corrode, especially if the water is high in chlorine or acid content (the same conditions that caused the heat exchanger to corrode.)

Only commercially pure titanium tubing virtually eliminates all chemical corrosion, and only heat siphon has titanium!
